Family Literacy Night

I am very excited about participating in Family Literacy Night at George R. Austin Intermediate School on Howland Road in Lakeville on January 31. I will be there with both my books (Tyler and the Spider and Grandma, Tell me If You Can) to talk with the children about my inspiration for the books and offering crafts for creative little hands and minds. I look forward to meeting and mingling with other local authors at the event. It should be a fun-filled evening for all!

Cambridge Carnival

Wiggles Press and some of its authors will be participating in this year's Cambridge Carnival-KidFest. "Tyler and the Spider" was a big hit last year and the kids LOVED making spiders. I will be there again this year with "Grandma, Tell me If You Can". I'm sure the painted seashell necklaces and magnets will be a big hit, too!

The Cape Cod Children's Writers has been meeting at the local dock in Falmouth. Here's the view at last week's meeting.

And then I went home and read "Wereful and the Captain" by our very own

Linda Williams to Katelin. Katelin loved the pictures and the story of the little tugboat who thought his useful days were over and the little boy, Tommy, who's life he saves.

And for me the sights and story brought to mind my Navy days, when I was young and full of adventure myself!

A Good Day at Yellow Umbrella Books!

Tuesday started out very hectic. I had SO much to do before the "Meet the Author" event, showcasing "Grandma, Tell me If You Can", at Yellow Umbrella Books. I had seashells still needing holes to put strings through for necklaces and then stringing them, making sure all the magnets would hold up their shells, off to the Centerville Library to borrow some watercolor pencils, back home to pick up my oldest, Debbie, who got roped into helping and then off to Chatham, where we hit construction. But of course, we made it with ten minutes to spare!

Eric, had put out a lovely nautical display,

really giving the whole event a thematic atmosphere. Debbie and I set out the shells and coloring pages and before we were even finished with the set up.....a book already sold!

The craft was a BIG hit- kids of all ages getting in touch with their "inner mermaid artist". And when they were all done with their masterpieces they got to wear them home! Suprisingly, the boys chose

necklaces over the magnets as well. It was such a fun time. Parents were taking pictures of their children painting. I enjoy the conversations with visitors and connecting with people from the area, many who had lived in Centerville or had been to the Centerville Library, where I got the inspiration for the story.

The children were delightful- asking to take home shells and coloring pages to brothers and sisters who weren't there and all smiles when showing their parents their painting skill. Parents and children loved the book's artwork, so beautifully done by Michelle Podgorski. And I was treated to family stories of similar walks on the beach with grandparents and parents by old and young alike.

Thanks SO MUCH to Eric of Yellow Umbrella Books for this huge opportunity and fantastic day! In the end, most of these were gone

the kids had a great time and we're going to do it again! Watch for updates on the next signing/craft at Yellow Umbrella Books!!

Summer is heating up!....for Grandma, Tell me If You Can

With the release of Grandma, Tell me If You Can only last week, it has already been picked up by it's first bookstore-Yellow Umbrella Books in Chatham. There will be a book reading/signing and craft on Aug 23 from 11-1!

It's only fitting,though,that the first reading be at the Centerville Library on August 12 at 10am, since this is where I got my inspiration for it!

Come and join me as we go on an adventure full of mermaids and mermen, racing seahorses, wishing well whales and more. There will be a craft for little ones and another for the big kids.

Illustrations are key to a Picture Book

When people think of the word "book" it's words that come to mind, but "Picture book"?-well then it's "pictures". When a child picks up a picture book and looks solely at the pictures, he or she should be able to follow the gist of the book.

A recent blog post by Jeanne Stewart of the Cape Cod Children's Writers group discusses what makes a great illustration vs just a pleasing work of art.

A fine example is the 2010 Caldecott Winner "The Lion and the Mouse"by Jerry Pinkney.

Without text, the pictures convey the message behind Aesop's fable.

One of things I really love about how Rosemarie Gillen illustrated "Tyler and the Spider" is that even without words the story is clear.

From afraid to friends...

Here each is afraid of the other and imagining what horrible thing is going to happen.

Each is closing their eyes, waiting for the inevitable (oh no!!)

but in the end, they discover that the other is quite nice and become friends.

In my next book,"Grandma, Tell me if you Can" Michelle Podgorski has brought the underwater realm of mermaids and mermen stunningly to the page.

So, from an author who can pen a word, but never, ever, ever draw a decent picture..Thanks to the illustrators who bring my words to life.

Don't Play Catch With Jelly...But DO read the book!

Katelin and I had a wonderful opportunity to meet the authors of "Don't Play Catch With Jelly", George Jack and Jennifer Rackley, at a book fair held by the Bedford PTG and Barnes and Nobles in Manchester, NH.

The bookfair, held Feb 11 & 12, was a blast! The first day Katelin and I enjoyed skits performed by the Peter Woodbury School Destination Imagination Team and a musical performance by Bedford High School Vocalists, which Katelin LOVED! They were marvelous.

There was a great turnout for the reading of "Don't Play Catch With Jelly", read by Ken Williams of the Bedford PTG and then joined by George and Jennifer. The kids loved the silly story and helped by calling out what they thought the next word would be. A fun and interactive way to get them involved and giggling.

Following the reading, parents and kids stood in line to get their autographed copy!

It was a fun filled day for all and with a percentage of book sales going to the Bedford PTG a great day for books AND education!

The New England Aquarium

Katelin and I rang in the New Year at the New England Aquarium in Boston.

Our first stop was the wonderful ice sculpture right in front.

The first thing were the Harbor Seals out front. These are always a big hit with Katelin.

Right inside were the penguins. These were my favorite!

We saw so many really cool marine animals-sea dragons, frogs and the jellyfish were beautifully colored.

Katelin's favorite place was the Giant Tank with sharks, turtles and colorful fish!.

As for the petting area, I'm not sure if she liked it or not or just thought it was funny!

We finished off at the fur seal show, which was a big hit with everyone!

But at the end of the day, just like at the zoo, Katelin's favorite animal of all...Fox :)

One more shot of the ice penguins, now somewhat melted from a nice warm day, and a shot of Boston on the way out.

For parents-be aware that it's a pricey ticket $21 for adults $13+ for kids, and no AAA discount. There's some breaks for students/seniors and people in wheelchairs are free. The parking was...outrageous at $35 but I hear it's less if you don't park in the closest garage. Check out visitor information here.

I found the food to be reasonably priced and good. The getting around was fairly easy, though it was very crowded that day. The only thing was no buttons to push to open doors and it made it difficult with Katelin's chair. The ramp around the Giant Tank was a bit steep, but that couldn't be helped. There is an elevator that goes almost to the top, I'd recommend going up and then coming down the ramp.

The gift shop offered a wide variety of souveniers, so beautiful glassworked octopi and the toy penquins were super soft. All in all a perfect way to start off the New Year!

Halloween Fun at Coonamessett Farm

Hey Kids! Check out this great place-Coonamessett Farm. It's in nearby East Falmouth and has all sorts of family friendly fun. Katelin enjoyed a perfect day there yesterday, picking pumpkins and then painting it (and herself).

Even Skyler the Spider from "Tyler and the Spider" joined us, thanks to the great facepainter there.

You can feed the chickens and see alpacas, donkeys and more.

In the spring they have a Little Sprouts Kids' Gardent Program, where kids can help plant and grow their own vegetable garden.

The farm doubles as a research facility so you'll see neat things like a wind turbine,

and here's what I thought was the coolest-hydroponics-plants growing like crazy in just water, no soil at all. Super neat.

For mom and dad there's a nice little restaurant and organically grown food to buy and upstairs are handmade gifts and my favorite- the alpaca fur covered stuffed animals, some of the naturally softest stuffed animals ever.

So hop on over and have a fun filled family day!

Harry McNairy Tooth Fairy, written by Ann Fitzpatrick Alper and illustrated by Bridget Starr Taylor

This is a wonderful story about the North Mill Valley District Tooth Fairy, Harry McNairy and his family. It seems tooth fairies can't grow their own teeth and need the baby teeth of others, so when Michael Madding decides to keep his tooth, this is a BIG problem. Harry's children Barry and Shary both still need teeth and as his wife Mary says "there aren't many children in your district, Harry dear". Harry has to go about trying to convince Michael M. to leave his tooth under his pillow. It's a delightful story, fun and imaginative and one of Katelin's favorites!

Boston Kid Lit Nite

The day wore some folks out!

Roxbury Day at Roxbury Heritage Park was tons of fun and the weather couldn't have been better. Debbie and Katie joined in the fun as we listened to jazz music from the wonderful Makanda Band, listened to poetry and promoted Wiggles Press to teachers, parents and even some local politicians! See a short video, here! Debbie and Gabe got along wonderfully and Katelin danced and colored the day away. Of course, "Tyler and the Spider" was there and another sucessful day of spider making was had! I enjoyed visiting the other booths and being part of this joyful celebration and overall wonderful day.

What a wonderful day! We joined other area organizations at KidFest, and area designated for kids to color, make bead crafts, get their facepainted and of course....make SPIDERS! Wiggles Press was there, passing out information and making people aware of their current and upcoming books. Met fellow author George and his parrot Pippy, but the biggest hit was the spiders. We ran out of supplies and the publisher, Rochelle graciously went and got some more so that all the kids who wanted could make their own.

Top this off with a variety of booths selling jewelry and handmade crafts, costumes, music, parade and my personal favorite-fried dough! it was fun for all. Enjoy the pictures : )

14 Cows for America

This is a beautiful story, that makes me cry everytime. It is touching and a gentle way to introduce 9/11 to children who weren't even born at the time. The story revolves around the gift of 14 cows by the Maasai to America in the aftermath of September 11th. Here, you can find more about the book itself and the story around the gift, what happened afterwards and the ongoing program that came from it. It only shows how one small act of caring can impact the world.

The local library has been sending out its one copy of "Tyler and the Spider" as soon as it comes back in and so purchased two more copies to keep up with demand! One of the leading reasons the book is so popular- to read to children who are afraid of spiders. This was not something I had thought of, but it's been mentioned to me so many times now that it must be so.

Many schools require summer reading and kids may dread having to do it. But it doesn't have to be a chore. Here are some summer reading tips for The Children's Book Review.

Make Summer Reading a Must

As a parent, you want your child to experience the same fond memories of summer that you did, whiling away the long hot days, riding their bike with friends, running through the sprinkler, and starting a lemonade stand. What you don’t want is to see them sitting in front of the television or computer for three straight months, forgetting everything they spent the last school year learning. This is where summer reading comes in. Whether or not they’ve been assigned a particular book to read for the next term, you can (and should) set up your own summer reading program.
The importance of reading, for children of all ages, cannot be underestimated. In addition to acting as a tool to improve vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension, reading gives kids a chance to explore their interests at their own level. From action to adventure to mystery novels, they can escape to a world that is full of possibilities. Or if they like non-fiction, there are plenty of books on plants, animals, art…literally any subject and at every reading level. Don’t let them tell you it’s boring. All children have interests. It just might take a little work to find them.

Plus, if you institute a reading schedule, it will keep your kids on track for the next school year. Allowing them total abandon to run around as they please may be appealing in that they are, after all, kids. If they can’t enjoy a certain amount of freedom from responsibility now, when can they? But a lax attitude will only make it that much harder for them (and you) when they have to return to school. If they won’t read on their own, have mandatory reading time, maybe half an hour to an hour a day. Take them to the library, bring home a stack of books, and set up a little reading nook or fort for them. There’s a good chance they’ll get sucked into their books and spend more time reading than required. And when they finish a selection, have them start a journal telling what their favorite parts were and why. All of this will serve to keep their minds active and disciplined, as well as improve focus, concentration, memory, and reasoning skills. In addition, forming good reading habits now will carry over into their adult lives.

It’s all too easy to allow your child to fall prey to the one-eyed nanny, especially if you have to work all day while they’re at home. But setting a reading schedule for your child is worth the effort. At the end of the day, you’ll have a built in conversation as they tell you what they learned or how their book is progressing, as well as their thoughts or feelings. You can bond with your child on an intellectual level and marvel at their cognitive development. You want your child to have every opportunity to advance and succeed in life, and that starts with reading. It may take some effort to get them on board, but they’ll enjoy the rewards for the rest of their lives.

And don't forget about your local library-chances are they've got a summer reading progam that's full of fun!

Seniors Have Dreams, Too

This non-profit was begun by mother back in 2007. It grants wishes to senior citizens who, due to finacial hardship, have never been able to have that special wish come true. This article in the Cape Cod Times is by the Associated Press and was distributed nationally and internationally. Turns out they're not the only ones doing something similar. There may be a similar organization near you! Take time to check it out, perhaps you have a skill or way to make a senior's wish come true, nothing makes you feel as great as volunteering!

What a blast! The reading at the Centerville Library was fantastic. I had super helpers in Hailey and Ace and with parents helping out the kids made their own "Great Big Spiders"! The librarians had made a bunch of "matchbox beds", so every spider got a bed. The only down side was the little sneakers didn't stay on very well, so we'll have to figure out something else for them next time. Enjoy the pictures!

Reading Tomorrow at the Centerville Library

There will be a reading tomorrow, June 5th at 11am, of "Tyler and the Spider" at the Centeville Library. The children will get to enjoy not only the book, but will be able to make their own little (or big) spider. Miss Penny, Jessie and myself were working hard today cutting out sneakers, eyes and figuring out just how to put them all together. Ok, it wasn't work, it was loads of fun and we had quite a few laughs. So come and join the fun. If you can't make this one, there will be more readings at other local libraries soon. Katelin's Favorite Stories, Vol III

Totally out of season, but who doesn't love a good Christmas tale any time of the year?? Auntie Claus is Santa's older sister and she teaches the lessons of Christmas to her great-niece and nephew, Sophie and Chris. Katelin loves Santa, so any story about him gets high marks, but this story is extra cute as Sophie travels to the North Pole and gets treated like an elf! It's fun and exciting, the illustrations are wonderful and it's followup book, Auntie Claus and the Key to Christmas, is just as wonderful. Children's libraries are sure to carry these two favorites and kids will love them no matter the time of year.

Katelin's Favorite Stories, Vol II

Katelin is a Pooh fanatic, and has been since very early on, but the real start of the craze was a two foot high Pooh that talked when you pushed his tummy given to Katelin on her 7th birthday by her very good friend, Ryo. This was followed on her ninth birthday by a second two foot high Pooh that talked, but said different things, given to her by her grandmother. These two bears have been joined over the years by many Pooh's in many shapes and sizes. Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne, various stories, are currently Katelin's choice anytime she gets a choice. And, during our storytime at the library we read two chapters from the Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

As a sidenote-one of my favorite all-time poems is by Milne-When I was Six- and I am able to recite it from memory, having not actually read it in over thirty + years.

Grandchildren and favorite stories

I recently had the great pleasure to visit my grandchildren in California. This was the first time I've seen the three youngest and I loved every diaper change, spitup, and precious smile. The two oldest loved being read to. One of their favorites was the three little pigs and the boy was so cute to shake his head and put a finger to his chin and go "in in in" every time I said, "no, not by the hair on our chinny chin chins!"

Katelin's favorite stories Vol. 1

Anyone who spends anytime with Katelin at all, knows that she LOVES Fox. Fox is to Katelin what Pooh is to Christopher Robin. Well we found a great story-"No More Water in the Tub!" and there's a fox on almost every page. The first time Katelin read this story, she tried to put her Fox in the book : ). It's a great story about two brothers and the older brother is telling stories about what could happen if too much water got in the tub. It's a lot of fun. Katelin recommends it!

Years ago when I lived in Washington, my friend Shandon took me to see Jackson Browne in concert. Guess what!, It rained that day, shocker I know considering we lived pretty close to Seattle, lol. But, a singer, Shawn Colvin, was the one who started it all off and she was amazing! The thing I remember most is that she had a whole list of songs to do, but completely changed it when it started to rain and every song she sang had something to do with rain. I was so impressed. She has a great voice and see she was just nominated for a Grammy! Plus she rocks on the guitar!

This story also got it's numbers today! That's all three for now. "Grandma, Tell Me if You Can" is about a boy and his grandmother walking on the beach and he asks her questions about...the waves, the smells, seashells, sand and on and on. She answers his questions with descriptions of mermaid chefs and artists, fighting squids and the wind that tells the stories. I've seen the sketches for this and it's going to be amazing. This one is going to be something special : )

Jackson's Cloudy Day is moving along!

Got word from the publisher today that "Jackson's Cloudy Day" now has it's ISBN and LCCN numbers! Jackson is a boy home with a cold, who spends his day looking at the clouds and imagines up some wonderful things- a band, a castle, a whale, a sailing ship among many others. So, despite being sick he has a wonderful, adventure full day. I got the idea from me and the kids doing the same thing, especially on long trips. Watch for this book by September (maybe sooner if it keeps zooming along-hoping, hoping, lol)

Editors...they actually DO make a difference!

Not that any of you would know this, I've never worked with an editor before. I have a very lovely, wonderful woman named Alice, who is a retired English teacher, that usually gives my writing a once over for me. She's done a wonderful job of helping me with my grammar and puncuation (which many of you may know is NOT my strong point). However, the publisher at Wiggles Press requested that we use editors prior to sending in any new submissions. Ann Klefstad had offered her services on Wiggles Press and I decided to work with her on my newest project. "Daddy, If I was a polar bear." What she was able to do with some very minor edits was really something, making it much more visual and more natural speech. Here is an example-This is what I sent in-

But, what if I was a lion
and lived on the plains
with giant paws and a tail
and a great golden mane,
who lay in the sun
all lazy and free,
if I was a lion,
who would you be?

This is what I got back-

If I was a lion, though,
if I lived on the plain,
swished my tail in hot dust,
shook my big, golden mane.
If I lay in the sun
all lazy and free,
If I was a lion
who would you be?

Notice very little is different, but what a difference that little bit makes! Much more visual and more interesting with the actions included-swishing and shaking. I'm certain that the more editing I see the better writer I will become, and in the end-that's what it's all about.

School's more than half way through-How do you keep them reading in the summer??

Always a challenge-how to keep a child reading through the summer. I found this article on The Children's Book Review and thought it might be helpful for those parents wondering the same thing. I have to say it gets harder and harder, but with books like Harry Potter, the Twilight series, The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod we breezed through last summer, at least with my oldest.

The Centerville Library, along with other libraries in the CLAMS Network, runs a very successful summer reading program, full of incentives and related crafts. My favorite part of it-a puzzle completed piece by piece by the children, who earn pieces based on how many hours they read.

Yup Baseball season is right around the corner and so begins my concentrated research for "A Catch in Time". For those of you who don't know, "A Catch in Time" will be my first children's novel. I've had the idea for some time now and finally have the time to research it. The story revolves around a young boy, a radio and the Great Depression. A baseball card will play a small but important role in the story. I have chosen this card as THE ONE! Lou Gehrig has always been my favorite.

For those of you not up on baseball-Lou Gehrig was a teammate of Babe Ruth's on the NY Yankees; until Cal Ripken came along, he held the record for longest streak of consecutive games played;part of the famed "Murderer's Row" the 1927 NY Yankee Lineup (first 6-4 of which are in the Baseball Hall of Fame);his was the first number to be retired in Major League Baseball. There's tons more to know and admire and while not historically accurate in every detail "The Pride of the Yankees" is one of the best sports films ever made, I never make it through his last speech without a tear.

First MAJOR Poetry Event!

According to their website over 1000 readings have been organized across the nation in the last three years. This is phenomenal. What a lovely week so far on the Cape! With temperatures in the 50's it's easy to believe that FINALLY the winter is coming to an end. One of the things I look forward to as the weather warms up and tourist season is looming, is the Artist Shanties. My aunt Shirley Blair Flynn helped start those shanties years ago, and it's a nice feeling to know they are still going strong, as is the Shirley Blair Flynn Center for the Arts on Pearl Street, which includes the Guyer Barn. For those of you who live on the Cape or use the Ocean Street docks you've probably seen the artist shanties. Each of the shanties host various artist/s and crafts. This year's Cape Cod Strollathon for Rett Syndrome will be held on June 5th. This is NOT just any spring day, it's Katelin's 17th Birthday. I came across this picture from 2008. The world of books is full of letters and some of the BEST letters are IBSN and LCCN.
What are they? and why do books need them?

IBSN-stands for International Book Standard Number "The purpose of the ISBN is to establish and identify one title or edition of a title from one specific publisher and is unique to that edition, allowing for more efficient marketing of products by booksellers, libraries, universities, wholesalers and distributors"

LCCN-stands for Library of Congress Control Number "It is actually a reference number to locate the bibliographic data, or catalog record, for a specific work in the Library of Congress. It is not, as some publishing newcomers tend to believe, a call number for finding a specific edition or format of a particular title. Therefore, you only need one LCCN to cover a hardback and paperback for the same title or to cover new editions of the same title."

You can see how they are similar, but there is a subtle difference. Every different edition of a title will have a new ISBN, but the LCCN will remain the same (ie each title only gets one) no matter how many editions and formats are printed.

Meet Maru! Maru is a gift to my daughter's boyfriend, but will be spending some of his time visiting at our house. He's a super sweet puppy, a bit of an escape artist according to the breeder. He's getting along great with their other dog, Buster, and is very friendly. I can't wait until he comes over and meets our cat, Tiger.

Poet Peter Saunders

Had the great pleasure of attending the Hyannis Library Author Series yesterday to hear Mr. Peter Saunders speak about poetry and read exerpts from his new book, "My Father's Shoes". Mr. Saunders teaches "So you want to be a poet" at the Cape Cod Community College and has published 10 books including "My Father's Shoes". The event was attended by children and adults alike. We were even given an assignment! After coming up with the answers to ten simple questions, we had to put our words together in a poem of sorts. Some used only those words, others (like me) used other words as well. The highlighted words are the ones from the exercise. You can tell, I've got Saint Patrick's Day on my mind, lol.

Upon the wind,
Upon the air
I hear the music of Bach
as I sit upon the riverbank
along the River Shannon
with the sunset in my sight
I see a horse
run through a field of daffodils-
oh, such are the dreams of Spring.

Mr. Saunders was kind enough to give me some possible exercises for the Centerville Library Poetry Club. I look forward to giving them a go!

and you know what THAT means. You're right....ST PATRICK'S DAY!! One of my favorite children's authors/illustrators is Tomie DePaola; Mr. DePaola grew up in my hometown and even had lunch at my grandma and grandpa's house when he was a kid. Two of my favorite stories by him are "Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato" and "Jamie O'Rourke and the Pooka". (Many people will know him for Strega Nona). Mr. DePaola was kind enough to autograph these books for Katelin, but Katelin being Katelin...well let's just say books are meant to be read among other not so undamaging things, so these would not fetch any sort of a price by now. These books are great fun, and when narrated in the best fake irish-american brogue I can come up with, causes Katelin to laugh( I'm sure it's the stories and not my brogue!)

As a sidenote to those who remember the movie "Harvey" with Jimmy Stewart...Harvey, the big rabbit, was a type of "pooka".

There are so many things to see in Washington DC that even though I've been quite a few times, I have not seen all I've wished to see. But I am reminded of one of the most interesting, quirky things I saw a few years ago, that I think some of the kids out there would like, especially if you are like my son Sean, who LOVES astronomy! The memorial to Albert Einstein, situated in an elm and holly grove in the southwest corner of the Academy grounds, was unveiled at the Academy's annual meeting, April 22, 1979, in honor of the centennial of the great scientist's birth. Einstein is depicted seated on a three-step bench of Mount Airy (North Carolina) white granite. The bronze figure, weighing approximately 4 tons, is 12 feet in height. Three caissons, totaling 135 tons, sunk in bedrock to a depth of 23 to 25 feet, support the monument.

In its left hand, the figure holds a paper with mathematical equations summarizing three of Einstein's most important scientific contributions: the photoelectric effect, the theory of general relativity, and the equivalence of energy and matter. Three quotations from Einstein are engraved on the bench where the figure is seated:

The star map at the statue's base--a 28-foot field of emerald pearl granite from Larvik, Norway, is embedded with more than 2,700 metal studs representing the planets, sun, moon, stars, and other celestial objects accurately positioned by astronomers from the U.S. Naval Observatory as they were on the dedication date.

The sculptor, Robert Berks, known for his portrait busts (John F. Kennedy at Washington's Kennedy Center), based the work on a bust of Einstein he sculpted from life in 1953. Landscape architect James A. Van Sweden designed the monument landscaping. The other authors of Wiggles Press and I received a notice today that our books would be assigned LCCN's (Library of Congress Catalog Numbers). An interesting note from the publisher...."Books can be printed with ISBN and most think that once the register a copy right they will automatically listed in the Library of Congress... this is not true you have to apply for the LCCN Library of congress number separately." Those of you who know that I've been to Washington DC several times may also know that the Library of Congress is the most beautiful building in the world to me. I already have a poem in an anthology that is listed there, but knowing that books of mine will be here thrills me.

My daughter, Katelin (the inspiration for "Tyler and the Spider", suffers from Rett Syndrome. A rare genetic disorder that afflicts 1 in 10,000-15,000 girls. They have been able to reverse Rett Syndrome in mice and although it may not happen in Katelin's lifetime, one day they may be able to do it for children after her. "Da Goodie Monsta"

My two daughters and I were fortunate to be able to attend Robert Peters' reading of "Da Goodie Monsta" at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. It was a wonderful story, with fantastic descriptions and touching characters. The moral of the story-sometimes you have to go look for your dream-is a great one for adults and children alike. In addition to his reading, Mr. Peters also had artwork on display and it was a real pleasure to see and hear his inspiration.

Austin and Henry

"Austin and Henry" are best friends, only one of them is a DINOSAUR!!. This is a year-long book project with the Centerville Library's youth group, The Shell-vers. The Shell-vers will be illustrating this book,which will be (we hope) published and sold as fund-raising for the youth programs at the Centerville Library. We are very fortunate to have Mr. Vincent Kirsh, author/illustrator of Natalie and Naughtily, agree to be a speaker and a bit of a mentor (mostly to me, as I learn the process right along side the group). Mr. Kirsh did a wonderful presentation last year at the library for the little kids, complete with on the spot illustrations. It was engaging and fun. "Grandma, Tell me if you can.." has been assigned to Martin E. McDonald. Check out some of his work at www.martinsketchyideas.blogspot.com and www.darkdreamsstudios.com On www.wigglespress.com you can see his work in "The Perfect Pet". You can also see it on the video posted on the homepage at around time 25 seconds. His illustration of the whale is beautiful and I think he will do a fantastic job with the underwater mermaid/mermen scenes and I look forward to seeing his sketches.

Rosemarie Gillen was chosen as the illustrator of "Jackson's Cloudy Day". I've already seen sketches of her Jackson and Jackson's mom. Let me tell you, they are wonderful! Can't wait to see the rest.

My children tend to be a bit camera shy, this can happen, especially when they become teenagers. Thankfully, the grandchildren have not reached this stage yet. Who knows there may be a book in me, inspired by them!

Jackson's Cloudy Day is slated for release in September!

My oldest daughter, Debbie, and I love to pick out pictures in the clouds and so does Jackson! So, on a day he's got a cold and just not feeling too well, Jackson spends his day looking at the clouds to pass the time. He visits a giant's castle, climbs the mast as Cap'n Jack on a sailing ship, and takes a ride on a whale, filling his day with adventure and fun!

Looking at clouds is a great way to spend a lazy day and it's fun to let your imagination run wild and to see what it can find!

Hey kids, meet Katelin!

Katelin, who inspired Tyler and the Spider, has a rare disorder called Rett Syndrome. When she was very little she was just like all the other little children, she played and talked and did all the things that one year olds could do! But then, when she was about 1 1/2 she wasn't able to do these things any more and it was very sad. As she grew older, she looked like other children her age, and sometimes it was hard for them to understand why she couldn't talk and play, but once they got to know her, they found ways to make her laugh and smile. Kids are wonderful! Now she's 16!! I can hardly believe it. There's still lots of things she can't do, that she probably wishes she could (me, too) but she can say a few words now and loves to play and swim, like lots of children do. Here is a picture of Katelin swimming. You can't see it here but boy does she LOVE to splash!!
